Bio

Inventor and entrepreneur Geoffrey von Maltzahn is a New Venture Principal within Flagship VentureLabs, where he focuses on inventing new technologies and launching companies to solve global challenges in health care and sustainability. Geoff joined Flagship in 2009, bringing over a decade of experience inventing and innovating at the interface of biology and engineering. During his graduate research Geoff authored over 20 scientific manuscripts and invented the first therapeutics that communicate in vivo to find and treat cancer; new mass spectrometric methods for detecting and monitoring complex diseases; remote-controlled materials and methods for nanosurgeries, in vivo barcoding methods; novel class of biomaterials; and other technologies to address important problems in biology, chemistry, engineering, and medicine. Geoff has received over 20 awards and honors for his inventions, including the prestigious Lemelson-MIT Student Prize, awarded to the single most innovative student at MIT; the National Inventors Hall of Fame Graduate Student Prize; the Biomedical Engineering Society Graduate Research Award; the Harvard-MIT Martha Gray Prize; and the Randolph G. Wei Award, for MIT’s most outstanding contribution at the interface of life sciences and engineering undergraduate research. Geoff has also had his inventions recognized among the “world’s greatest scientific breakthroughs of today” by Dean Kamen on Planet Green and in the 7 Innovations of the Year by MSNBC. He was awarded a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics from MIT, obtained with the support of Whitaker and NSF Fellowships; a M.S. in Bioengineering from the University of California, San Diego; and a S.B. in Chemical Engineering from MIT.
