Joseph T Gorman

Bio

Mr. Gorman is retired Chairman and CEO of TRW Inc. From December 1988 through January 2001 he served as chairman and chief executive officer. He had been president and chief operating officer since 1985. Mr. Gorman joined TRW’s legal department in 1968. He became secretary of TRW in 1970 and a vice president in 1972. He served as vice president and general counsel from 1976 until 1980, when he was elected executive vice president and given responsibility for the Industrial & Energy Sector, then one of TRW’s three major operating units. An Indiana native, Mr. Gorman holds a bachelor’s degree from Kent State University and a doctoral degree from Yale Law School. Upon graduation from law school in 1962, he practiced general corporate law in Cleveland for five years. Mr. Gorman, a past chairman of the U.S.-Japan Business Council, received Japan’s 1994 Prime Minister’s Trade Award for his contributions to promoting improved U.S.-Japanese trade relations. He served on the boards of the U.S.-China Business Council and The Prince of Wales International Business Leaders Forum and was a trustee of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He also served on the Council on Competitiveness as a co-industry vice chair and member of the executive committee. Mr. Gorman was vice chairman of the U.S.- Canada Automotive Select Panel, where he chaired the panel’s report on the competitiveness of the North American automobile industry. Mr. Gorman is a director of Alcoa Inc., and a retired director of The Procter & Gamble Company, National City Corporation and Imperial Chemical Industries plc. He was a trustee of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Foundation and the Committee for Economic Development, served on the Board of Directors of United Way Services and served as co-chairman of The Business Roundtable. He was a member of the President’s Export Council, the President’s Advisory Group of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, The Business Roundtable’s Policy and Planning committees, and the National Bureau of Economic Research. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, The Business Council and the Cleveland Council on World Affairs. In addition, he served as executive committee member of the Ohio Business Roundtable, co-chair of the Joint Automotive/Supplier Governmental Action Council, council member of the World Economic Forum, and senior member of The Conference Board. A leader in education reform, Mr. Gorman is a founding member of the Ohio Governor’s Education Management Council and is a trustee of the New Ohio Institute. He is a member of the Business-Higher Education Forum, Kent State University Foundation, and the Yale Alumni Association. Mr. Gorman was chairman of Cleveland’s Civic Vision 2000 and Beyond, Leadership Cleveland, and Cleveland Tomorrow. He serves on the board of the Greater Cleveland Growth Association. He is a member of the Founders Society of the Cleveland Museum of Art and is a trustee of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, The Musical Arts Association, and The Cleveland Play House.
