Bio

Richard leads Advanced Energy & Cleantech investments. Richard's focus is on identifying capital efficient companies in a field with many capital-intensive technologies under development. Richard joined Early Stage Partners as Managing Director in September, 2009. He has over 20 years of experience as an executive, entrepreneur and consultant in the energy industry, with wide knowledge of energy sector participants, activities, economics and regulations, and strong business perspectives on the energy sector's likely evolution. Since March 2006, Richard has been the Fellow for Energy and Environmental Advancement at The Cleveland Foundation, where he has been an active force in building an advanced energy cluster in the Cleveland area, with significant attention to wind manufacturing and offshore wind development. He is currently on loan to NorTech, where he is a founding Principal in its advanced energy initiative, to foster regional commercial activity. Before coming to Ohio, Richard founded Denver-based NextWave Energy in 1999, assisting clients with new energy businesses or technologies in business development, strategy and capital formation. Reflecting NextWave Energy's entrepreneurial interests, Richard participated in the founding and management of several energy-related ventures. Prior to founding NextWave Energy, Richard was a Senior Vice President at global commodity trading firm Louis Dreyfus, where he was responsible for North American electric and gas business development activities. Richard previously was a management consultant for 6 years at McKinsey & Co., assisting clients in developing strategies and enhancing organizational capabilities to prepare for electricity sector deregulation and restructuring. He worked for extended periods with two of the five largest U.S. electric utilities and aided several other electric utilities, large energy consumers, fuel suppliers, and independent power producers. Richard began his professional career at ICF Resources Inc. in Washington, DC, as an economic analyst of the electricity and coal industries. Much of his work supported the development of the sulfur dioxide allowance trading provisions of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. Richard has degrees in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (B.S) and Stanford University (M.S.).
