Bio

Vishal Gupta, a managing director at BVP India in Mumbai, joined the firm in 2006. He focuses on investments in energy, infrastructure and financial services. Vishal has been closely involved with Bessemer’s investments in financial-services firm Motilal Oswal Financial Services; infrastructure-EPC company Shriram EPC; Sunil Hitech, a company that builds and erects equipment for the power sector; renewable-energy company Orient Green Power; and Shriram City Union Finance, where he is a board observer. Vishal also serves on the boards of NetAmbit, Snapdeal.com and Indian Energy Exchange, and he has been involved in Ind-Barath Power Infra and Kiran Energy. Prior to joining Bessemer, Vishal was a senior manager in the treasurer’s office at Reliance Group, where he conducted strategic financial modeling and valuation analyses and made recommendations to senior management about new business lines. Vishal helped the firm establish a private-equity fund that invested in such companies as Celebrity Fashions, which went public in late 2005 on the Mumbai stock exchange; Adlabs, a publicly listed, integrated-media operation; and other firms in the healthcare and financial-services sectors. Previously, Vishal worked as a bond trader for SBI Mutual Funds, which he joined from DSL Software, a joint venture of HCL Tech and Deutsche Bank in India. While at DSL, Vishal served as an executive assistant to the CEO and was involved in making a number of acquisitions. In addition, he managed the establishment of a business-process outsourcing call center that has since grown to 500 full-time employees. Vishal holds an M.B.A from the Indian Institute of Management in Calcutta, is a chartered accountant and has a B.A. in commerce from GS College, where he was ranked one of the top 750 students in the country. He is also a member of Mensa and has been a nationally-ranked table tennis player.
