Bio

Joined the Candover Board in January 2008. Was British Ambassador to France from 1996 to 2001. From 2002 to 2006 was the Permanent Under-Secretary at the Foreign Office and Head of the Diplomatic Service, and the Prime Minister's Personal Representative for the G8 Summits at Gleneagles and St Petersburg in 2005 and 2006. Early career included time at the World Bank in Washington and the British High Commission in New Delhi. Non-executive director of Associated British Foods plc, Credit Agricole SA and Valeo SA and Chairman of the international aid agency Merlin, a registered charity. Has been an independent member of the House of Lords since 2006 and is Chairman of the House of Lords Appointments Commission.
