Richard Howarth

Bio

Richard Howarth is a highly qualified banking professional. He has spent 34 years in the industry working in senior management positions for Barclays and Standard Chartered. As a member of the Kohli Ventures’ management team, Richard brings a wealth of financial knowledge and a great deal of business experience from Africa. In addition to his role at Kohli Ventures, Richard set up African Private Office in July 2012 to offer the benefit of his experience in Africa and the Financial Services industry to private individuals, businesses and professional firms. The company helps parties to establish and manage their relationships with private banks and other financial institutions. Prior to setting up his own business Richard worked at Standard Chartered where he helped to plan and develop an African Private Banking business. During his time at the bank he was the Market Leader for Africa and responsible for individual client management. In 1996,Richard began building a book of high net worth clients in West Africa, routinely travelling to the continent on a frequent basis. He assumed leadership of Barclays’ Private Banking team for Africa which allowed him to travel to and understand all of the major Anglophone markets in Sub-Saharan Africa. He ended his career at Barclays as Head of their African Private Banking business. In this role he travelled to Angola, Benin, Botswana, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria, Sao Tome and Principe, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda and Zambia. The first 31 years of his career were with Barclays, where he began his career on the shop floor in the domestic corporate market and then quickly progressed onto Barclays’ Management Development Programme whilst studying for his professional banking qualifications. After that he moved on running the international corporate business at the bank’s Northumberland Avenue International Branch. It was in this role that he first travelled to Africa and his love for the continent began. Richard has strong connections throughout the financial services industry. He is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Financial Services and holds their Financial Studies Diploma qualification.
